SSDA 2005

37th structural steel design award winners

Thursday 23 June 2005

The 37th annual structural steel design awards have been presented to an unusually wide range of structures, from a private house in London to the huge tonnages involved in a steel works extension. Bridges featured strongly among the five Award winners, including a crossing of the River Usk and a small ‘rolling bridge’ on a residential development. Judges also gave commendations to three projects and a merit award to one.

The winners - from what judges said was a very strong field of entries - were presented with the awards at a ceremony held at the Savoy Hotel on the 23 June, chaired by Corus Construction & Industrial’s Managing Director Andrew Page. Judging was by an independent panel appointed by sponsors the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), Corus and the Steel Construction Institute (SCI).

Speaking at the ceremony judging panel Chairman, David Lazenby CBE, representing the Institution of Civil Engineers, paid tribute to the quality of this year’s entries. He said: “Although the number of entries varies from year to year, the quality of the winners remains remarkably high. 2005 is no exception, with an astonishing range, from massive tonnages to detailed craftsmanship, from complex elegance to practical simplicity.”

The objectives of the SSDA scheme were laid down 37 years ago as ‘…to recognise the high standards of structural and architectural design attainable in the use of steel and its potential in terms of efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics and innovation’. The judges' citations this year demonstrate that all the award winners met these objectives.

The award winners were:

The River Usk Crossing, Newport Southern Distributor Road

The Wellcome Trust Gibbs Building

Midland Mainline Rail Bridge

Tower Environs Scheme

Rolling Bridge, Paddington Basin
