Protect 365™ Normal Containment Parapet

Road restraint system experts at Corus have developed two groups of high-performance parapets for modern highways. Normal Containment Parapets are widely used on trunk and local roads, available with standard and anti-vandal mesh.

An improved product

The new and growing suite of Protect 365 parapets from Corus signals a major move forward in highways restraint systems to ensure safety benefits for all road users. We have drawn on 40 years of knowledge and experience to develop parapets that offer improved performance combined with the added advantages of easy installation, low maintenance and long life. Proven to cope with a wide variety of impact scenarios and to retain cars on the bridge deck, our parapets are designed to absorb a high proportion of impact energy - guaranteeing enhanced passenger safety and reduced bridge deck loadings.  Protect 365 parapets have been developed and tested using a rigorous methodology to ensure full compliance with the EN 1317 Standard.

Flexible application

Protect 365 N2 is a range of railed parapets suitable for all situations that require an N2 accredited product (for impact speeds up to 110 kph). Protect 365 N1 is designed for N1 applications (for impacts up to 80 kph).  Post centres have been designed and dynamically tested to a range of 2.5 m– 3.75 m. This means our parapets can be adapted and installed around varying bridge designs. Both groups of parapets have also been tested and proven for use on short bridges and are suitable for bridges of lighter construction.  Protect 365 N2 and N1 can be installed with standard mesh or anti-vandal mesh. A compatible range of Corus Protect 365 transitions and Protect 365 safety fence is also available to meet overall road design requirements.

Designed to perform

At Corus we have challenged assumptions and evaluated scenarios beyond the scope of EN 1317 to ensure our Protect 365 systems deliver a very high degree of safety performance. We embraced passive safety principles and used advanced computer modelling to simulate foreseeable aspects of Protect 365 N2 and N1 parapet system behaviour in representative crash situations involving modern vehicles.  Subsequent strain gauge analysis during accreditation testing proved that our modeling predictions were robust and accurate. Multiple impact positions and directions, material properties and tolerance variations were all checked and double-checked as part of our commitment to develop parapets suitable for current and future road conditions.

Assurance of safety

All Protect 365 parapets have been subjected to full-scale impact tests carried out under strictly controlled conditions by MIRA Ltd.  Test results prove that our parapets offer an impressive combination of safety characteristics and perform consistently to minimise impact severity irrespective of impact position.  Evaluation of worst case scenarios has demonstrated that Protect 365 performs in the extremes and reduces the level of crash injuries and the inherent associated risk. Physical tests endorsed a key feature of our parapet design - minimal wheel penetration. The tests proved that car wheels are prevented from protruding beyond the bridge deck during impact. During the tests, our parapets also passed crucial vehicle roll and yaw requirements with flying colours.

Easy to install

Installation methods were a serious consideration in the development of Protect 365 parapets. We wanted to deliver systems that were safe, easy and quick to install – with all the associated whole life cost benefits. Out-of-position tolerances were incorporated and increased to aid installation of parapets on site. Our parapets can also cope with individual anchorages being out of position by as much as 50 mm without the need for structural or system changes. Prethreaded holes within the components aid assembly. Simple rail connections allow for easy and quick repair after an impact. Because the Protect 365 parapet design reduces bridge deck loadings during impact, our parapets are also an ideal choice when bridge efurbishment is required.

Built to last

Ease of maintenance was another design driver in our aim to deliver high-performance products offering lifetime value. Protect 365 parapets are made from hot finished rectangular hollow steel sections and are built to last. Protect 365 parapets are hot dip galvanised so there is no need for painting to extend their life. Stainless steel bolts ensure long-term reliability and durability. Protect 365 parapet systems are built to a consistent high quality under licence by a limited number of accredited parapet companies. All of our licensed manufacturers and installers are Highways Agency Sector Scheme approved and assured to ISO 9001 or ISO 9002.
