An improved product

The Protect 365 H4a parapet is part of a new and growing suite of highways restraint systems developed and tested by Corus using a rigorous methodology. We have drawn on 40 years of knowledge and experience to develop a very high containment parapet that offers improved performance combined with the added advantages of easy installation, low maintenance and long life. Protect 365 H4a has been evaluated beyond the type testing impact specified within the EN 1317 Standard and is designed to reduce the severity of injuries in the event of an accident. It is proven to retain a 30 tonne truck on the bridge deck. And because Protect 365 reduces bridge deck loadings during impact, our parapet is an ideal choice for new builds or bridge refurbishment.

Flexible application

Protect 365 H4a is suitable for situations that require an H4a accredited product for very high containment. Compatible with Protect 365 N2 and Protect 365 N1 normal containment parapets, it can be installed on a variety of bridges including those of lighter construction.  This is because Protect 365 parapets have been designed to absorb a high proportion of impact energy - guaranteeing not only enhanced passenger safety but also reduced anchorage forces and bridge deck loadings. The continuous steel cladding on our H4a parapet means it is ideal for use in critical areas where debris must not be allowed to pass through the barrier – such as on road bridges crossing high-speed rail lines.

Designed to perform

At Corus we have challenged assumptions and evaluated extreme foreseeable scenarios to ensure our Protect 365 systems deliver improved performance well into the future. We embraced passive safety principles and used advanced computer modelling to simulate aspects of parapet system behaviour in representative crash situations involving modern vehicles. Multiple impact positions and directions, material properties and tolerance variations were all checked and doublechecked.  Protect 365 H4a incorporates an improved bracket design to take the force of small and medium size cars.  Stepped front sheeting on the face of the parapet minimises the risk of severe or potentially fatal head injuries for occupants of small cars during an impact with the barrier.

Built to last

Ease of maintenance was another design driver in our aim to deliver high-performance products offering lifetime value. Protect 365 parapets are made from hot finished rectangular hollow steel sections and are built to last. Our Protect 365 H4a parapet uses hot dip galvanised material so there is no need for painting to extend its life.  Stainless steel bolts ensure long-term reliability and durability. Protect 365 parapet systems are built to a consistent high quality under licence by a limited number of accredited parapet companies. All of our licensed manufacturers and installers are Highways Agency Sector Scheme approved and assured to ISO 9001 or ISO 9002.
