Sustainability Case Studies
Steels sustainability has been documented in the following building case studies. Each has a profile of the building along with the reasons as to the benefits of steel and its sustainability credentials.

Prologis Park
Prologis has set itself an impressive set of sustainability targets for its future distribution facilities, as exemplified by Prologis Park near Stockley Park, Heathrow. The 5,500 m² warehousing facility was supplied by Barrett Steel Buildings, and was designed so that it could be disassembled and reused, if required on another site, even down to the level of the ground beams.

Howe Dell School
Howe Dell School in Hatfield provides a sustainable template for the schools of the future. Commissioned by Hertfordshire County Council it was conceived as a test bed for eco-friendly technologies.

Palestra
Palestra is the new home of the London Development Agency and the London Climate Change Agency. It is fitted with an array of renewable energy technologies which reduce the building’s operational energy and satisfies the GLA’s Supplementary Planning requirements for a minimum of 10% of renewable energy provision.

Bourbon Lane
The requirement on this project was for a wide range of housing types fitting in with the urban surround, which maximised the use of space whilst retaining an open feel to the development.

Kings Place
The ‘flexible use’ structure was designed as an eight storey steel-composite frame over three basement levels. The primary structure consists of 12 m span fabricated beams with multiple, circular web openings and supporting a 130 m deep composite slab.

Breathing Space
A steel frame was chosen for speed of construction and for its ability to easily integrate with structural elements, for example the gluelam roof and external walling. The steel structure provides straight-forward structural connections between these elements.

Vulcan House
Vulcan House is an attractive addition to Sheffield's city centre. The structure is the Home Office's new purpose-built headquarters and every detail has been fine-tuned to deliver optimum environmental performance.

Manchester Civil Justice Centre
The 15-storey steel framed building is the biggest court complex built in the UK since London's Royal Courts of Justice in Queen Victoria's reign, providing 34,000m2 of accommodation.

London School of Economics
Corefast, the innovative modular system for the construction of structural building cores, helped speed up the installation of the two lift cores in this exciting remodelling of a fine Edwardian building in central London.
